GENAI: TRANSFORMING THE LANDSCAPE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

As part of our recent E-Conference for International Educators, one Info Session focused on the rise of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and its impact on higher education. Jakob Patekar from RIT Croatia led the session, exploring how technology is reshaping interactions between students and educators both inside and outside the classroom.

GenAI, referring to tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and GitHub Copilot, has quickly integrated into education, offering new opportunities while raising important questions. Patekar examined how students and academics are using these tools, along with the benefits and challenges they bring to the sector.

While generative AI is now readily available, research suggests that only 50% of higher education students regularly access these tools, and just 12% use them daily. Many students who engage with GenAI view it as a “private tutor,” leveraging it for study support and assignments. However, Patekar emphasized the risks of overreliance, particularly when AI-generated content is taken at face value without verification, often leading to inaccuracies or incorrect academic references.

Educators are also adopting AI to enhance teaching and understand how students interact with these tools. Some see it as a productivity booster, while others are cautious about its potential to undermine human creativity and expertise. Finding the right balance is key.

The session also highlighted practical applications, such as EdChat, a chatbot developed by the South Australia Department for Education to handle routine queries, freeing educators to focus on more complex interactions. However, concerns around academic integrity, data privacy, and the ethical use of AI remain at the forefront of the discussion.

As AI continues to evolve, educators and institutions must navigate its role thoughtfully – maximizing its advantages while addressing challenges responsibly. Patekar concluded on an optimistic note: Generative AI presents an opportunity to rethink traditional learning approaches, enhance engagement, and create innovative educational experiences -without losing the essential role of human expertise.
